Biographical / Historical

The institution for Jewish adult education "Freie Juedische Volkshochschule Berlin" was founded in 1919 and supported by various Jewish organizations including the B'na-B'rith Lodge and the local branch (Ortsgruppe) of the Zionist Organization. The institution initiated courses and lectures on various aspects of Jewish religion and history, and organized courses on sociology, literature, and economics.

In 1934, the "Freie Juedische Volkshochschule" was merged with the "Schule der juedischen Jugend", renamed "Juedisches Lehrhaus Berlin. Freie Juedische Volkshochschule", and reshaped according to the model of the "Lehrhaus" in Frankfurt a. M. "Juedische Lehrstaette Ch. N. Bialik" was a Zionist institution. - "Rambam-Lehrhaus Berlin" had orthodox-Jewish roots.
