Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the collection consists of original correspondence between Gottfried Saloman and Marta Mierendorff, 1938-1939, as well as Mierendorff’s journal entries from 1941. Much of the material concerns philosophy, or is poetic, flowery and romantic with a background of angst.

Folder 2 holds original records pertaining to Mierendorff, Saloman, and to his mother Rosa; as well as an autobiographical essay by Marta Mierendorff (undated typescript, 6 pages). There is also a clipping with Marta Mierendorff’s obituary.

Biographical Note

Gottfried Arno Saloman was born in 1896 in Berlin. Being Jewish, he was not allowed to study law under the Nazis, but he graduated from business school (“Diplom-Kaufmann”). In 1939 he got officially married to his gentile life-partner Marta Mierendorff (born 1911 in Berlin-Charlottenburg). In 1941 Saloman and his mother Rosa were deported to Theresienstadt; he was sent to Auschwitz in 1944, where he perished; his mother returned to Berlin in 1945.

The sociologist Marta Mierendorff eventually immigrated to the US, where she died in 2002.
