Perl Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains photocopies of documents pertaining to Anton Felix Perl’s emigration from Vienna to Canada, as well as has medical training and career as a physician in Canada. Items documenting his education consist of certificates from the Schottengymnasium in Vienna and University of Vienna, as well as a letter from the Schottengymnasium certifying his attendance and coursework. Additional certificates from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada, Medical Council of Canada, and American College of Physicians are also present. Of particular interest among documents pertaining to Anton F. Perl are letters sent to Perl from the archbishops of Winnipeg and Regina offering to help him immigrate to Canada and discussing options for him in a medical career there. Perl’s birth, marriage, and death certificates, as well as several photographs of him, are also included.
The collection also contains documentation of the Perl family, including family trees of the Perl and Richter families, which include some birth, death, and marriage dates and locations, and biographical notes on Anton F. Perl’s parents Siegfried Leopold Perl and Elisabeth née Richter. Also included are photographs of various family members, including Siegfried Leopold Perl, Elisabeth Perl née Richter, E. Arleen Perl, Conrad A. Perl, and Monica Ann Perl.
Other items in the collection include an essay by Anton F. Perl about his relationship with Dr. Frederick Ludwig Eid, the doctor’s life, and his medical career, accompanied by obituaries and clippings about Dr. Eid, as well as a photograph of him. A 1941 photograph of St. Joseph's Hospital in Macklin, where Dr. Eid worked, is also included.

Anton Felix Perl (later Anthony Felix Perl) was born on October 27, 1912, in Vienna, Austria. His parents Siegfried Leopold Perl (1880-1943) and Elisabeth née Richter (1883-1943) were of Jewish origin but converted to Catholicism in 1912. From 1922 to 1930, Perl studied at Schottengymansium in Vienna. In 1936, he graduated from the Universität Wien with his medical degree. Perl was a resident at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna from his graduation in 1936 until he was fired on racial grounds in 1938. He then immigrated to Canada in 1938 with the help of the archbishops of Winnipeg and Regina. Both of Perl's parents died in Auschwitz in 1943. Once in Canada, Perl continued his practice of medicine, specializing in internal medicine. In 1941, Perl married E. Arleen Tweed. He died on November 2, 1985, in Sarnia, Ontario.
