Julius Glass Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains photocopies of various documents relating to numerous members of the Glass family and their activities during the early 20th century. There are also several family trees.
Folder one contains an original advertisement for the Julius Glass shoe factory, an article about the 40th anniversary of the factory, and the will and testament for Julius Glass. Folder two contains materials relating to the opera singers Alfred and Elsa Glass including a program for Figaro, in which Alfred performed the part of Figaro, the official letter dismissing Alfred on the basis of his Jewish background, a postcard of their tombstone, and the map of their cemetery plot in Weissensee. Folder three contains documents relating to three generations of father and sons: Sally was the father of Paul, the father of John. Included are some genealogical correspondence of Sally, patents which Paul Glass received for inventions in the 1930s and a short piece by John Glass on his childhood in Germany during the 1930s.
The documents in folder four, which relate to the family of Paul Glass's wife, Anni Hoff, include birth certificates and certificates of baptism and conversion, as well as a letter by Alice Hoff (née Cohen) probably to her husband Hermann Hoff during World War I. Folder five contains an article regarding the sculptor Kurt Kroner, one of Sally Glass's first cousins. There is also a portion of the megillat, an article on Jewish volunteers during the Spanish Civil War, and photographs of an unidentified family.

Biographical Note
Julius Glass was born in 1843 in Breslau and became a prominent businessman, founding a successful shoe factory Julius Glass & Co. He died in 1909. His sons were Sally Glass and Alfred Glass. The latter became an opera singer and married Elsa Sant-Glass (née Salomon), also a singer. They committed suicide together in March 1943 as their deportation became imminent. Their daughter, Lottie, succeeded in emigrating to America. Sally Glass's son, Paul, worked for a telecommunication firm and pantented several inventions. He, together with his wife Anni Hoff, and sons John and Aaron, emigrated to England in 1939 and then the United States in 1940.
