Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the papers of Kurt Friedlaender. The documents refer to his education, professional career, honors, his dismissal from the civil service on "racial" grounds, his emigration, and post-war restitution claims.

The collection also contains vital, educational, professional, and military records, financial papers, genealogies, wills, honors and awards of other members of the Friedlaender family, including Dagobert Friedlaender; Joseph Jonas Friedlaender (great-grandfather); Max Friedlaender (uncle); Martin Friedlaender; Clara Friedlaender; Paul Friedlaender; and Erich Friedlaender.

Biographical Note

Born in Bromberg, Germany (now Bydgoszcz, Poland) on September 17, 1888, Kurt Friedlaender studied law and was a senior official in the provincial government of Pomerania. He emigrated to Great Britain in 1939 and died in London in 1968. His parents were Martin Friedlaender (1856-1932) and Clara née Friedlaender (1864-circa 1942). He had two brothers, Paul (1885-1886) and Erich (1891-1942). His grandfather, Dagobert Friedlaender (1826-1904) was a member of the Preussisches Herrenhaus (upper chamber of Prussian parliament).

This collection was previously processed. In 2014, duplicates were removed, folder dates were added, the box replaced, and a finding aid created. Photocopies of original LBI catalog cards, with item-level description, were left in folders. Correspondence regarding the acquisition of the collection was removed to the donor files.
