Scope and Content Note

The collection contains documentation of four generations of the Herzberg family of Berlin, including Moses Herzberg, Joseph Herzberg (1799-1871), Philipp Herzberg (1846-1916), and Bruno Herzberg (1887- ).

Folder one contains a citizenship certificate for Moses Herzberg's citizenship in the city of Berlin.

Folder two contains items pertaining to Moses Herzberg's son Joseph Herzberg, most of which document his work as a physician. Included is a birth certificate; certificates for his entrance into and discharge from military service; various medical licenses and related correspondence; appointments to various medical positions; citizenship oath; membership certificate for the Jewish men's club Magine-Rèim; and documents pertaining to his receipt of the Order of the Red Eagle.

Folder three contains items pertaining to Joseph Herzberg's son Philipp Herzberg, most of which document his education and work as a physician. Included are birth certificates; school certificates, including doctor of medicine diplomas; medical licenses; membership certificates for professional organizations; appointments to various medical positions; and family documents, including birth, marriage, and death certificates.

Folder four contains items pertaining to Philipp Herzberg's son Bruno Herzberg, including a birth certificate; school certificate; doctor of law diploma; and letters pertaining to his receipt of the Red Cross Medal and the Order of the Lion and the Sun.

Folder five contains family trees of the Herzberg family from the 16th to 20th centuries with some birth and death dates and locations.

Biographical Note

Moses Herzberg received citizenship in Berlin in 1813. His son Joseph Herzberg (1799-1871) became a physician in 1826. Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussian appointed him to the position of Sanitätsrat in 1847. Joseph's son Philipp Herzberg (1846-1916) was also a physican. He studied at the University of Berlin from 1867 to 1872. Philipp was appointed to the position of Sanitätsrat and later Geheimer Sanitätsrat by Wilhelm II in 1895 and 1906, respectively. Philipp Herzberg's son Bruno (1887- ) received his doctor of law degree in 1910.
