Ernest Kahn Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The items in this collection were assembled by Ernest Kahn, son of Morris and Ida Kahn. The majority of the collection consists of financial statements and correspondence pertaining to restitution claims filed by Morris Kahn against the government of West Germany in the 1950’s and 1960’s. There are also photographs and family trees.

Biographical Note
Ernest Kahn was born in Nieder-Florstadt, Upper Hesse, Germany in 1927, the son of Moritz (Morris) and Ida Kahn. Morris Kahn was born in 1893 in Geinsheim (Gross-Gerau), Germany to Sigmund and Sophie Kahn née Eppinger. Morris served in the army from 1916 to 1918. Ida Kahn (née Levy) was born in Nieder-Florstadt to Gustav and Amalie Levy in 1901. In 1924, Ida and Morris were married in Nieder-Florstadt. Morris immigrated to the United States in 1936 and was followed two years later by his wife Ida, children Ernest and Ruth, and his mother-in-law Amalie Levy. The family settled in New York City.

Abstract
The Ernest Kahn Family Collection documents the lives of Ernest Kahn, his father Morris Kahn, his mother Ida Kahn née Levy, his sister Ruth Kahn, and his maternal grandmother Amalie Levy née Blumenthal. The bulk of the collection contains correspondence and financial statements pertaining to restitution claims filed against the German government.

The collection has been arranged into two series.
