Erna Weingold Kleinermann Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains documentation of the Erna Weingold Kleinermann family, including vital records, identity cards and passports, school certificates, and correspondence.
Folder 1 contains documents pertaining to Erna Kleinermann née Weingold, including a birth certificate; letter of recommendation; identity card; marriage certificate; and passport.
Folder 2 contains school certificates for Erna Weingold from public schools in Waren and Berlin, as well as one certificate from the religious school of the Lippmann-Tausz-Synagogen-Vereins.
Folder 3 contains handwritten letters from Jacob Weingold in Europe to his sister Erna Kleinermann in New York. Included are 1939 and 1940 letters sent from Antwerp, a 1940 letter from Saint-Papoul, a 1945 letters from Switzerland, and letters from Brussels sent from 1946 to 1948. The letters include discussions of Jacob Weingold's efforts to immigrate to the United States with his family both before and after World War II, as well as his family's life in France and Switzerland during World War II and in Belgium after the war.

Biographical Note
Erna Kleinermann née Weingold was born on February 20, 1897, in Passenheim (Pasym). She grew up and attended school in Berlin. In 1923, she married Josef Kleinermann in Dresden. Their son Meinhard was born on June 29, 1924, and daughter Gisela was born on June 23, 1928. The family immigrated to the United States in the late 1930s.
Jacob (Mendel) Weingold grew up in Berlin. After Kristallnacht, he escaped to Belgium and then to France and Switzerland. He retuned to Belgium in 1945 and finally immigrated to the United States in 1948, where he reunited with his sister Erna Kleinermann.
