Scope and Content Note

The Harry Colish Collection consists of documents pertaining to Harry Colish and his sister Kate Kolish. Series I consists of various personal papers, including genealogical information, correspondence, writings from Shanghai and Hsinking (Changchun, China), and photographs. Series II consists of official and financial documents, including lists of property and household items belonging to the Colish (Kolisch) family that were seized by Nazi officials. Also included are restitution claims and various official and legal documents, including education and employment certificates and passports.

Biographical Note

Harry Colish was born Hermann Kolisch to Paula and Robert Kolisch in Vienna in 1909. He trained in law and economics before emigrating from Austria to Shanghai and then to the United States. He died in New York in October 2002.

His sister Kate Kolish (born Käthe Kolisch), 1910-1977, earned a doctorate at the University of Vienna in 1935 and a Bachelor of Arts in library science at Carnegie Library School in 1944. She was an assistant professor of library science at the University of Pittsburgh.
