Henriette Levi Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 3669

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of letters exchanged between Henriette Levi and her children, especially with the family of her son Siegmund Levi and of her daughter Therese Gotthelft.

Accompanying the letters are a portrait photograph of Henriette Levi, and a signed dedication note from Zerline Levi to her husband Siegmund, for whom she had the correspondence bound into a volume. Many of the letters feature messages both from Henriette and the Gotthelfts to Siegmund, and are in general of an informal, friendly tone. Notable is a letter dated 1868 December 26, in which she mentions a visit to the family of Franz Rosenzweig, with whom she was befriended while living in Kassel. About thirty letters included at the end of the volume are from the Radziejewski family, largely to Zerline Levi from her brothers and other family members. Like the other letters, they are friendly and informal. Notable among this group of letters are a couple of Yiddish letters, as well as a couple of letters from the front during the Franco-Prussian War.

Abstract

This collection consists of letters exchanged between Henriette Levi and her children, especially with the family of her son Siegmund Levi and of her daughter Therese Gotthelft.

Note

Owing to the former binding of the letters into a volume, some text at the margins has been lost or obscured.

Processing Note

The letters were originally bound into a volume by Zerline Radziejewski and given to her husband Siegmund Levi in memory of his mother, who wrote many of the letters. The letters were disbound for preservation.
