George Berlstein Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains documents pertaining to Emil and Irma Neumann's life in Vienna before World War II and their emigration from Vienna to the United States, including identity cards; passports; documentations pertaining to their acceptance of the names Israel and Sara; documents pertaining to Emil Neumann's claim for property seized by the German government; and family correspondence.
Folder 1 contains a postcard sent to Emil Neumann informing him of his brother's death during World War I; identity cards; German passports for Emil and Irma Neumann; certificates and related documentation confirming that Emil and Irma Neumann accepted the names of Israel and Sara, respectively; and list of dates documenting Emil Neumann's service during World War I and emigration from Vienna to the United States.
Folder 2 contains documents pertaining to Emil Neumann's claim for property that was seized by the German government while in storage with a shipping firm in Trieste. Included is an affidavit describing the items that were seized and their values, as well as supporting documentation.
Folder 3 contains letters and postcards to Emil Neumann in Italy and New York from his parents in Vienna. The letters are dated from August 8, 1940, to November 27, 1941.
Folder 4 contains additional family correspondence, including a 1940 letter from Emil in Italy.

Biographical Note
George Berlstein was born on August 11, 1929, in Vienna. After the Anschluss, he immigrated to England on a Kindertransport. In November 1940, he immigrated to the United States.
Emil Neumann was George Berlstein's father-in-law.
