Scope and Content Note

This is a collection of three essays by Dr. Peter Schrag about his family, documenting in selected details his family's transition from being refugees from Nazi Germany to being Americans. A short essay, “We were once refugees”, is followed by “Oma”, reminiscences about his grandmother Else Szamatolski, and by “My mother and me”, selected memories of his mother Ilse Szamatolski-Preiss-Schrag.

Biographical Note

Peter Schrag was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in May 1938. At the age of 5, his parents divorced, and Peter Schrag was put in custody in Beirut. Peter Schrag and his mother went to the USA in late November 1938. His natural father, Hans Preiss, went to Australia. Peter Schrag and his mother settled in Jackson Heights, New York City. In 1945, his mother married Karl Schrag. In 1955, Peter Schrag entered Harvard College and later finished medical school.
