Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a broad range of materials offering insights into the Jewish community of Cologne throughout the 19th and 20th century. Included are a few original documents from 1880 to the 1930s, photocopies of various community and legal documents, as well as brochures and booklets pertaining to Cologne community and welfare organizations.

The original printed materials in folder one consist of a speech delivered by Dr. Heinz Frank (Chairman of the Board of the Jewish community), a seat reservation card for the Glockengasse Synagogue, a brochure of the Israelitischer Kinder-Spar-Verein, clippings from an 1881 copy of the Amtsblatt der Königlichen Regierung zu Köln, and texts of songs. Also included are booklets of statutes from the Israelitischen Waisenstiftung, the Israelitischreligiöser Wohlthätigkeits-Verein, the Israelitischen Vereins Simchath Dallim, and the Verein zur Ausübung von Wohltätigkeit und Liebesdiensten. Folder two contains materials of the Israelitisches Kinderheim Köln including a foundation certificate donated in memory of Adolf Klipstein, a charity form with printed photographs of groups of children, and brochure with text and printed photographs. In folder three are photocopies of government documents about Jews in Cologne, a report on the religious school of the community "Adass Jeschurun" written by teacher Elias Gut, correspondence between the President of the Upper duchies in Cologne (Jülich, Cleve and Berg) and the mayor of Cologne, correspondence between the President of the Upper Rhine province in Koblenz and the mayor in Cologne regarding prestigious Jewish families, as well as notes from Dr. Max Kreutzberger related to aforementioned correspondence. Folder four contains various materials relating to the 1928 Cologne International Press Exhibition's special exhibit regarding the importance of journalism for Judaism and Jews. These materials consist of an exhibition guide, a report, a program, a booklet of statues of the JSOP (Jüdische Sonderschau der Pressa) association, and a circular.

Folder five is composed of the original title page and additional pages from an 1838 Hagadah by J. Offenbach, the Cantor of the Jewish community in Cologne. In the sixth folder is a list of archival collections of the Jewish community of Cologne compiled by Alwin Mueller, the text of a speech delivered by Dr. Erwin Schild at the 1988 Reformation celebration, and a newsletter with supplememntary materials for prepraration concerning an upcoming about Christian and Jewish relations and unity. The oversized material includes two architectural plans from the old synagogue in Deutz.
