Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence from Gertrude M. Meyer (Porto Alegre, Brasil) to Prof. Robert E. Lerner pertaining to the Kantorowicz family from Posen, Jan. 2002-[Dec.] 2005.

Also included are various materials, such as correspondence from Beate Salz, 1983-1990, and the transcript of a 1998 interview with Ben Barkan (a grandson of Else Milch.) Noteworthy is a 1916 original letter from the head of the Hartwig Kantorowicz liqueur firm, Franz Kantorowicz, to "Frau Lachman" in San Francisco, indicating his business interest in California.

Biographical Note

Else Milch, née Kantorowicz and her sister Gertrude were the daughters of Max Kantorowicz, whose brother Joseph was Ernst Kantorowicz's father. Else Milch was Gertrude Meyer’s mother.

Ben Barkan was the son of Lotte ( Charlotte) Barkan, née Milch, the eldest daughter of Else Milch.

Prof. Robert E. Lerner was working on a biography of the medieval historian Ernst Kantorowicz.

A book mentioned in the collection, ‘Jüdisches Schicksal in Deutschen Gedichten’, Berlin, 1959, owned by Else Milch, has been removed to the LBI Library.
