Scope and Content Note
The Briefe aus Amerika Collection is arranged in two series and includes letters, transcripts of the letters and some visual material. The collection provides insights into the everyday life of Irene Adler as well as into the lives of her family and the Hagenmeyer family members. The letters and the letters' transcripts are contained in Series I. Series II holds photographs Irene Adler sent to her correspondents, as well as some material regarding a book in which her letters were published.

Irene Adler was born on September 9th, 1898, in Buttenhausen, Germany, the daughter of Louis and Mathilde (née Löwenberg) Adler. She was the sister of the musician Karl Adler (1890-1973). Irene Adler visited the trade school 'Zepf'sche Institut' in Stuttgart. Here, she met Maria Hagenmeyer. After graduating from the trade school, Irene worked as a secretary in Stuttgart. In 1936, Irene, her sister Fanny and her parents immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City, where she worked as an accountant. Irene Adler died in 1980 in New York.
