Scope and Content Note

This collection documents the medical career of Marczel Haas (1900-1979) through his education and occupational activities. Items pertaining to his education include Gymnasium transcripts, university enrollment books, matriculation certificates, and diplomas. Haas’s medical career is documented by correspondence pertaining to his medical license, letters of recommendation, contracts for positions at hospitals in Breslau and Cluj, offprints of medical articles written by Haas, and professional certificates, including his New York State medical license.

Also included in the collection are photographs of various members of the Haas family and clippings about Marczel Haas’s wife Ruth Haas née Mamlock. These clippings come from various Breslau newspapers and contain articles about theatrical performances in which she participated and her work as a radio actress.

Biographical Note

Marczel Haas was born in Léva, Hungary (now Levice, Slovakia), on June 16, 1900. A physician, Haas received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Vienna in 1924, after studies at the University of Budapest, University of Cluj, and the German Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. He completed a fellowship at Necker Hospital in Paris from 1924 to 1925. From December 1925 to September 1931, he worked at the Surgical University Clinic, Breslau. Haas researched and published extensively on Morbus Basedow, also called Basedow’s disease or Graves’ disease. By 1940, Marczel Haas had immigrated to the United States with his wife Ruth Haas née Mamlock; he received his New York State medical license in 1942. In addition to practicing medicine and publishing in medical journals, Haas was also a member, and served as president, of the American-Hungarian Medical Association. He died March 4, 1979, in New York.

This collection was received with materials from the Addenda to the Arthur and Fritz Kahn Collection.

Processing Information

Materials from this collection were received with the Addenda to the Arthur and Fritz Kahn Collection. The Marczel Haas Collection was separated from the Addenda to the Arthur and Fritz Kahn Collection to form a separate collection. During processing, duplicate copies of offprints and articles were discarded. Collection documents and photographs were rehoused in new folders and envelopes. In May 2015, three rolled photographs and four rolled certificates were transferred to Conservation for flattening. In July 2015, the flattened photographs and certificates were returned to the collection.
