Wilhelm Buchheim Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains various personal documents of Wilhelm Buchheim and numerous lectures he gave in English and German. Folder 1 contains I.D. cards, passports, school exam certificates, Ehrenkreuz for WWI, reference letter, autobiographical notes to LBI, old inventory. Lectures in Folder 2 include English language (held in London) "Does Anti-Semitism Affect the Character of the Jews?" and "Education in Germany". Germany language lectures include "Das Jüdische Kind und seine Umwelt" "Apologetische Fragen im Religionsunterricht" "Die Neuordnung der Lehrerbildung." Folder 3 contains clippings, often on pedagogical topics, with some articles by Buchheim, others by Gustav Krojanker. The Jewish newspapers include "Gemeindeblatt Essen", "Jüdische Schulzeitung" and "Blätter fuer Erziehung und Unterricht."

Biographical Note
Born in Rosenthal bei Marburg on December 28, 1887, Wilhelm Buchheim studied to become an elementary school teacher and, after army service during World War I, taught in the Jewish school in Essen. From 1933 to 1939, he was principal of the Jewish school in Dortmund. He emigrated to the United States via Great Britain in 1939-1940 and died in New York City on October 15, 1957.

Wilhelm Buchheim's diaries are cataloged separately in the memoir collection. See ME 1535. They include war diary (1914-1917), London diary (1939 -1940), USA diary (1940-1943) and cover his experiences in World War I, life in Dortmund in the Nazi era, and his emigration as well as a family history by Buchheim.
