Biographical Note
Julius Kohsen was born as Julius Jakob Kohen on July 3, 1866 in Hamburg. The family moved to Hildesheim, where Julius went to school, before he completed an apprenticeship at a bank in Hanover. He worked at a banking firm in Berlin before moving on to a bank in Aschersleben, where he got married to Clara Rubensohn. The couple eventually moved to Berlin, and in 1925 they changed their family name to Kohsen. Clara Kohsen died in 1941. When Julius Kohsen was notified that he would be deported to Theresienstadt, he chose to die on August 25, 1942.
Henriette “Hetty” Steinberg, née Kohen was the daughter of Clara and Julius Kohsen. She immigrated to the United States in August 1938.
