Scope and Content Note

The collection contains documentation of Ruth DeJay née Warschawzik and Otto DeJay, formerly Otto Dietsche, including vital records, passports and identity cards, school certificates, military service records, correspondence, biographical notes, and family trees.

Folder 1 contains documents pertaining to Ruth DeJay née Warschawzik, including school certificates; apprenticeship contract; letters of recommendation; Holland-America line passenger list, including Ruth Warschawzik; passport; poem in memory of her cousin Hans Edelstein, who died during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War; declaration of death regarding her parents; curriculum vitae for her sister Mira Ogen; correspondence pertaining to the fates of her family members during World War II; autobiographical notes written by Ruth DeJay; and family trees.

Folder 2 contains documents pertaining to Otto DeJay, formerly Otto Dietsche, including a birth certificate; document certifying his residency in Offenbach am Main; identity card; legal document authorizing a change of name from Dietsche to DeJay; documents pertaining to his service in World War II, including an order to report for induction, naturalization certificate, enlisted record and report of separation, and separation qualification record; and death certificate.

Biographical Note

Ruth Warschawzik was born on April 26, 1911, in Königsberg to Owsei Warschawzik and Rose née Schapira. Ruth was educated in Copenhagen, Denmark, Danzig, and Berlin. After spending a year in Paris, she immigrated to the United States in January 1938. In May 1938, Ruth Warschawzik married Otto Dietsche. The couple later changed their last name to DeJay. Otto was born on July 26, 1910, in Offenbach am Main and died on February 19, 1971, in New York. Ruth died on May 13, 2006, in New York.
