Irene Shomberg Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists primarily of materials documenting Ernst Shomberg's education and career as a physician both in Germany and in New York after emigration. There are a also a few items pertaining to his wife's family and some genealogical materials.
Folder one contains various certificates related to Schaumberger's education from secondary (Gymnasium) through university, as well as a smaller amount of correspondence and documents relating to his practice as a dermatologist and venereologist in Germany and later as a surgeon in the United States. This folder notably contains an official notification (1938) that Schaumberger is considered a "Jewish" doctor. The second folder contains a broader spectrum of personal papers, including a humorous program from Schaumberger's wedding, papers and diary from his World War I military service, as well as papers from 1938-1939 relating to his and his wife's emigration and the various discrimatory penalties (Judenvermögenabgabe, etc.) imposed on them. There are also a few papers mentioning the changing of Schaumberger's first name from Sally to Ernst.
The remaining materials pertain to the his wife's family and the genealogy of the extended Schaumberger and Kaufmann families. Folder 3 contains a ḥalitsah for Friedrich Westheimer and a 50th anniversary wedding booklet for Isaak and Therese Kaufmann. The final folder contains a brief chronicle of the Schaumberger family beginning in 1765, and two family trees.

Biographical Note
Ernest Shomberg was born in Giessen in 1890 as Ernest Schaumberger, although his name is given on many documents before 1919 as Sally Schaumberger. He changed his name again in the late 1940s to Ernest Shomberg after emigrating to the United States, where he practiced at Harlem Hospital and other institutions in the New York City area. Schaumberger married Anna Kaufmann in 1921.
