Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials relating to Frida Friedberg Spector née Neumann (1910-1995), including educational records, dissertations, and copies of poetry.

Her educational documents include report cards, a Zensurbuch, diplomas from the universities of Dresden and Leipzig, and a small collection of inaugural legal dissertations with inscriptions to Friedberg, from Leo Langermann, Leo Zuckermann, Heinz Heinrich Grünberg, Karl Herling, Asher Kapel, and Elisabeth Rubinstein. Her dissertation "Die Sammelladungsspedition" (1933), with dedications to her mother and her father, and 10-page typed speech on the same topic, are also found here.

The collection also includes handwritten and typed copies of German and English poems, short prose, and quotations, mostly by famous poets and writers such as Kafka, Rilke, Werfel, and Hellmuth Steinitz.

Other materials include clippings; identification cards, including German and international driver's licenses, a Polish passport, a Cuban registration card, and an attendance card for the University of Prague; and a Polish passport for Izak Friedberg (b. 1882). The Various folder includes the service book for a 1935 Mercedes Type 170, calling cards, American citizenship paperwork, and a 1943 letter from Franz Werfel's secretary.

Biographical Note

Frida Friedberg Spector née Neumann (1910-1995) was born in Dresden, Germany. She studied law at the universities of Dresden and Leipzig, graduating in 1933. She immigrated to New York in 1938.
