Donald W. Stein Family Collection

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains documentation of the Stein and Kaufman families, including family correspondence and histories.

Folder 1 contains photocopies of letters from Emil and Belle Stein in Germany to Max and Hannah Stein in Indiana. Emil and Belle wrote the letters while on a trip to Germany during the summer of 1894. The letters include discussion of cities and family members Emil and Belle visited. Also included are accounts they wrote of the journey by steamship from New York to Europe.

Folder 2 contains photocopies of letters to Sophie Kaufman in Indiana from various members in Germany and the United States. The letters are from the 1850s to 1890s and include updates on family members' well-being, families, businesses, and emigration.

Folder 3 contains English-language summaries of the letters and family histories of the Kaufman family. The family histories discuss the family from the early 18th to late 20th century and include birth, death, and marriage dates and locations.

Biographical Note

Sophia Kaufman née Mittlelberger was born on November 16, 1833, in Braunsbach. Moses Kaufman was born on January 7, 1834, in Affaltrach. He emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1854. Sophia Mittleberger married Moses Kaufman on December 4, 1856, in Linton, Indiana.

Belle Stein née Kaufman, the oldest child of Moses and Sophia Kaufman, was born on November 3, 1857, in Elwood, Indiana. Emil Stein was born on March 3, 1853, in Königsberg, Prussia. Belle Kaufman married Emil Stein on January 10, 1877.
