Ernest B. Hofeller Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 5413

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence, personal papers and documents, and photographs documenting Ernest Hofeller's emigration from Germany to the refugee settlement in Sosúa, Dominican Republic, in the 1940s.

The documents and personal papers include a school certificate from Munich in the 1930s, but the majority of the papers concern Hofeller's emigration over Switzerland and Portugal to the Dominican Republic, and eventually to the United States. About 20 photographs illustrate this journey, including several which show daily life in the settlement in Sosúa. The collection also contains several letters sent by Hofeller's parents and sister, who remained in Munich, during the years prior to their deportaion in 1941. Finally, the collection also includes a family history manuscript covering the family's genealogy since 1721, with a later appendix concentrating on the Hofellers of Eichstetten.
