Scope and Content Note

This collection contains post-World War Two restitution matters, primarily sent from the Council of Jews from Germany. It includes meeting minutes as well as internal and external correspondence relating to Council for the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Jews From Germany (later the Council of Jews from Germany), as well as other organizations including the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany (Claims Conference), the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization (JRSO), the Leo Baeck Institute (LBI), and the United Restitution Organization (URO). It also includes clippings from AJR, Aufbau, and the Bundes Anzeiger, as well as draft legislation and blank applications for Bavarian and Hessian state restitution. Some documents have annotations from the German-Jewish attorney Hermann Simon.

Biographical Note

Hermann E. Simon was born on October 11, 1900 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. After studying law in Berlin, Bonn, and Frankfurt, Hermann Simon assisted other German Jews in emigrating before leaving Germany himself in 1937, when he settled in New York City. Following the war, Hermann Simon worked for the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver, and Jacobson. He died on August 14, 1990 in New York City.

Arrangement

The materials were originally in one large folder, entitled "Entschaedigungsgesetz." The materials were found in roughly reverse chronological order, and left in that order.

The LBI Archives holds the Hermann E. Simon papers (AR 6372). The LBI Library holds a "Tribute to Hermann E. Simon, 1900-1990, delivered at memorial service, Congregation Habonim, Oct. 2, 1990. Congregation Habonim (New York, N.Y.)", call number BM 744.3 S55 T7.

The LBI Archives also holds material about post-war restitution in general, such as materials from the JRSO (AR 1485), the Council of Jews from Germany (AR 5890), and the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe (AR 4420).

Processing Information

The collection was rehoused in acid-free folders and a new box. Some fragile clippings were photocopied and discarded.
