Werner Hans and Elsa Bloch Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection mostly entails manuscripts written by Werner Hans Bloch, dealing with the history of his family as well as the genealogy of Elsa Bloch, née Moeller. The manuscripts contain genealogical tables, photographs, correspondence and documents pertaining to individual family members and the broader historical context of German-Jewish history, written for Thomas Bloch to inform him about his ancestors. Moreover, the collection comprises family items referring to the death of Elsa and Hans Werner Bloch as well as various materials on the family.

Biographical Note
Werner Hans Bloch was born as Hans Werner Bloch in Königsberg in 1900. He was the son of Bertha Liebenthal (1870-1915) and Heinrich Bloch (1860-1942) and a student of medicine at the universities in Königsberg, Munich and Freiburg. After internships in hospitals in Berlin, Munich and Karlsruhe he accepted pediatric residency in Karlsruhe for a period of two years before he opened a pediatric practice in Offenburg in 1928. In 1931, Hans Werner Bloch married Elsa Bloch, née Moeller (1900-1985), who was a technical assistant at the Hygienische Institut Danzig. Hans Werner Bloch immigrated to New York City in 1936, and later the same year got Elsa Bloch and their first daughter Dorothy Bloch (1933-2012) to join him. The family moved to Elmira, New York where Hans Werner Bloch opened a pediatric practice in 1937 and became school physician in 1942. In 1947, the couple's second child, Thomas Bloch, was born in Elmira, New York. Elsa Bloch died on May 30, 1984 and Werner Hans Bloch passed away on March 25, 1993.

The collection was organized in two series. The items in Series I were ordered alphabetically. Series II is arranged chronologically.
