Janet Isenberg Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 6820

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a large amount of correspondence and documents of Adolph Bernd's (the father of Janet Isenberg) restitution claims, as well as five family trees documenting the genealogy of the Bernd, Schild, Drucker, Wolff, and Heine families.

Much of the restitution correspondence consists of letters and documents exchanged between the family attorney Paul Hirsch and authorities in Koblenz, although some of the claims papers went through Berlin. The restitution cases pertain specifically to assets of Adolph Bernd's parents Sally and Paula (née Wolff), as well as of his uncle Alfred Bernd, all of perished after being deported from Koblenz. There are also some claims materials related to the family business, a shoe store in Koblenz. The remainder of the collection consists of relatively lengthy family trees for various branches of Isenberg's extended family, some with data extending back into the 17th century. At the front of each of these manuscripts is a family tree diagram, followed by listings of individual family members which include vital statistics information, addresses, and relationships to other family members. Each manuscript ends with a name index.
