Scope and Content Note

Correspondence and articles regarding Markus's activities in the Jewish community of Berlin and in the refugee German-Jewish community in New York City. There are also some materials regarding plans to settle Jewish refugees in Mexico.

The bulk of the papers in the first folder consists of correspondence regarding Markus's role in the New York-based German-Jewish Club. There are also a number of items, including correspondence and reports, regarding the a plan to settle German Jews in Mexico. Among these latter papers are letters of support, one of which offers a donation of heavy industrial machinery for the potential Jewish setllers, from a German firm (1938). The clippings in the oversized folder generally pertain to Markus's activities in the Berlin community, although several pertain to Mexican affairs. A few of these clippings date to Markus's life after emigrating to New York.

Biographical Note

Craftsman and community leadre, born in 1883 in Ostrowo, died in 1954 in New York. Founder of the insurance company Die Hilfe, president of Zentralverband jüdischer Handwerker, founder of Jüdische Darlehenskasse GmbH Berlin and other credit unions, as well as president or member of a handfull of other Jewish community and labor organizations.
