Scope and Content Note

The collection contains archival materials pertaining to past Jewish life in the town of Schmitten in Hesse, Germany and neighboring communities.

Following a short historical survey of Jewish life in Schmitten until its destruction under the Nazis are photographs of tombstones in the Jewish cemetery, as well as photocopies of various documents and clippings pertaining to Schmitten. Also included is a transcribed, typed copy of parts from Grete Hoffmann’s diary, describing the last days of World War II in Schmitten.

Past Jewish life in neighboring communities such as Arnoldshain, Bad Homburg, Oberursel and Königstein is documented in clippings from the German press, circa 1963-2013.

Also included is correspondence of Josef Strauss, a former Jewish resident of Schmitten, with local authorities in the 1980s; and of Josef Strauss’ son, Norbert Strauss with Martin Hoffmann.

Biographical Note

Martin Hoffmann was pastor in the Protestant community in Schmitten. Grete Hoffmann was Pastor Hoffmann’s mother.
