Hannover Jewish Community Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains correspondence and printed materials related to the history of the Jewish community of Hannover.
In folder one is correspondence between Rudolf Herzberg and Baruch Z. Ophir from Yad Vashem concerning research materials, a questionnaire for the community book of Yad Vashem completed by Herzberg, and correspondence between Herzberg and Herman Muller of the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe. Corresponding notes and supplementary material from Herzberg is also included pertaining to the synagogue, management and activities of the Jewish community, community institutions, social and cultural organizations, Jewish education, outstanding personalities, deportations, the town of Wunstorf, and explanatory summaries of land and property belonging to the synagogue, Das Israel Simon'sche Waisenhaus, entailed estates, Verein für Krankenversorgung und Alterspflege, Gartenbauschule Ahlem, and Kindererholungsheim Norderney. Folder two contains photographs of the synagogue, a photocopied invitation to a parent-teacher meeting evening, a program and menu for the occasion of the inauguration of the new synagogue in 1963, and typewritten notes and text of a speech by Chief Rabbi Dr. Meyer (given in 1866). Folder three consists of the correspondence and related materials of Peter Schulze regarding his research on the history of the Jewish people and the Jewish communities in Hanover.
