Biographical Note

David Esaias Berliner was married to Hinde, the daughter of the merchant Abraham Jacob (died 1804) in Flatow West-Prussia (today Złotów, Poland), where in 1806 he was allowed to trade for an extra yearly tax on top of the Jewish head-tax (Kopfgeld), as long as Christians didn’t establish themselves in the same line of business (trading in indigo). David Berliner received his citizenship papers in 1809 and served in Flatow’s city council by 1823. He died in 1844. David and Hinde Berliner had a son, Abraham Berliner, who received his Flatow citizenship paper upon his father’s death in 1844, and who died in 1858.
