Heinz Herbert Liepmann Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 10111

Scope and Content Note

In this collection are personal papers and documents of Heinz Herbert Liepmann and his father Herbert Liepmann, as well as a few items belonging to other family members. The bulk of these documents relate to the Liepmanns' medical education, military service for Germany and the United States, and emigration to the United States in 1938.

The first folder contains Heinz Liepmann's papers and vital records, as well as a couple items pertaining to his maternal ancestors. There are also some family papers, specifically his parents' marriage certificate. The remaining materials in this folder document his secondary and university education, and then his emigration, naturalization, and military service in the United States. Notably, his university registration booklet from Breslau has a note on its inside cover which reads "not a pure Aryan." The second folder, containing his father's documents, is in a similar vein and primarily contains education documents and vital records. There are also a few items of correspondence, as well as a larger number of documents about his service in the German army as a military doctor during the first World War and his Iron Cross award.

The final folder contains sundry souvenirs, many of which were likely amassed by Herbert Liepmann. The largest group comprises a collection of "emergency currency" bills (Notgeldscheine) issued in various German cities in 1918 and 1921. These bills often feature rich, colorful illustrations and humorous scenes, often with jokes written in local dialect.

Biographical Note

Heinz Herbert Liepmann was born in 1914 in Obernigk, Silesia (now Oborniki Śląskie, Poland) as Heinz Schmidt -- his parents didn't marry until 1919 so he initially received his mother's name. Liepmann's father was a Jewish medical student and his mother Catholic. Liepmann began medical school in Breslau and continued studying in the Czech Republic, before he and his parents emigrated to the United States in 1938. After emigrating, Liepmann served in the United States army during the second World War, and then began a career as a tax agent for the New York state government.
