Scope and Content Note

The collection contains various documents and writings related to Grete Stohr and her niece, Lisa Neuman. The materials are primarily concerned with their respective emigrations from Vienna to New York.

The affidavit in folder 2 was issued by Rebekah Kohut for Grete Stohr (Margarethe Stoehr) in 1922. The military dog-tags are for Lisa Neuman's father during World War I when he served in the Austrian army. Lisa Neuman's 1930 passport is also included as is the passenger list for the May 1923 sailing of the Resolute steamship, on which Stohr came to New York. There is also a notebook with notes by Caroline Sonnenschein on English grammar and pronunciation. The diaries in folder 3 were kept by Stohr over 40 years. A brief synopsis is included in the front of the folder.

Biographical Note

Grete Stohr née Sonnenschein was Lisa Neumann's mother's sister. Grete was born in 1889 in Vienna and studied medicine there, becoming a gynecologist and pathologist. In 1923 she emigrated to New York, where she died in 1984. She provided the affidavits for Lisa Neuman and her family to emigrate in the 1930s.

Lisa Neumann was born in 1913 in Vienna. She emigrated to the United States in the 1930s, studied social work at Smith College and worked in psychiatric social work.
