Peter Altenberg Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains several original, handwritten letters, poems, sketches, and other manuscript materials by Altenberg, including one longer manuscript from early in his career. There is also a commemorative print produced by the Wiener Werkstätte and some printed matter about Altenberg's life and work.
Folder one contains several handwritten letters, poems, fiction sketches, and manuscripts by Altenberg, as well as a couple of photographs with signed dedications. In folder two are various materials about Altenberg, including some pre-war Viennese newspaper clippings and the text of a lecture by Mimi Grossberg on Altenberg. Folder three is comprised of an original handwritten manuscript by Altenberg entitled Aus einem Skizzenbuch (a typed transcription is also available in the folder), which was prepared for the magazine Der Zuschauer (chief editor Constantin Brunner), but never published as the magazine went under. Finally, an oversized, limited edition lithographic print, prepared by the Wiener Werkstätte on the occasion of Altenberg’s 50th birthday and autographed by Altenberg himself, is filed separately in an oversized folder.
