Moritz Werner Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 304

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains manuscripts and clippings of writings by Werner, correspondence, programs of the Freies Jüdisches Lehrhaus and various other materials.

The writings primarily cover topics such as Jewish history, especially of the Rothschild family, and pedagogical and theological issues relating to the place of Judaism in modernity and in German culture. Much of the correspondence is professional in nature, and includes letters from various periodicals and publishing houses; correspondence with one publisher, the Orell Füssli Verlag, even includes a contract. In fact, a considerable portion of the correspondence relates to a project for Füssli to translate Bevan's work Legacy of Israel . Some personal letters and postcards, among them a postcard from Bertha Rothschild, are also present in the correspondence. A subgroup of letters to Berthold and Siegfried Tendlau concerns their father, the noted folkorist and scholar Abraham Tendlau. A selection of course catalogs (1934-1936) from the Freies Jüdisches Lehrhaus in Frankfurt am Main lists some of the course Werner taught. Finally, there are some cards and photos of locations in Spain and Italy, as well as some photo-reproductions of pages from Hebrew manuscripts and various incunabula.
