Salomon Benedikt Goldschmidt Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The Salomon Benedikt Goldschmidt Family Collection holds papers and genealogical information on the descendants of Salomon Benedikt Goldschmidt as well as on members of the Porges von Portheim family, to which they were related by marriage. The collection includes some family papers, two genealogical works with extensive family trees, notebooks including diaries and account books, a memoir, clippings and a small amount of research correspondence.
Series I contains material on members of the Goldschmidt family, including those of Salomon Benedikt Goldschmidt's son Benedict Salomon, grandson Moses (Moritz) Benedict and great-grandson Marcus Moritz Benedict. Notable are the two genealogical works on the family, whose family trees provide an overview of the family members who appear in this series. Another item of interest in this series are the brief memoirs of Charlotte Esther Warburg, granddaughter of Benedict Salomon Goldschmidt. Related is a notebook of Markus Moritz Goldschmidt, which includes notes on significant dates of his family members' lives, such as weddings or births. Several account books of his father, Moritz Benedict Goldschmidt, evidence the financial situation of the family business. Similar to these items is a translation of an 1870 letter by Moritz Benedict to his sons regarding proper business practices. Official documents will also be found in this series, including legal and business documents for several family members. Notable among these are those that name Moritz Benedict to the city council of Frankfurt.
Papers of members of the Porges von Portheim family are located in Series II. Among the items in this series are two diaries by unidentified family members and the memoirs of Moses Porges von Portheim. In addition, this series holds some newspaper clippings and a photograph of Max von Portheim.
