Alfred Büchler Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 4817

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a number of Alfred Büchler's school papers from educational institutions in Vienna and Shanghai, as well as his German passport and a travel calendar from his emigration out of Austria.

The bulk of the school papers comprise report cards, first from secular and Jewish religious schools in Vienna. After 1938 Büchler attended a Jewish secondary school in Vienna and preparatory courses for emigration through the Jewish community administration (Kultusgemeinde). The remaining school papers date to his life in Shanghai and include report cards both for secondary school and university. Additional materials added at a later time include photocopies of official Austrian documents prepared upon his emigration in 1940-1941, as well as a call for membership in an Austrian-Jewish synagogue in New York City (1940).

Addenda: Inventory of the Alfred Buechler Collection at the Graduate Theological Union's Flora Lamson Hewlett Library. Transcript of oral history, interview with Alfred Buechler about his experiences in Vienna and his emigration to Shanghai.
