Malvine Fischer Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 6651

Scope and Content Note

Letters and cards sent by Malvine, Leopold, and other members of the Fischer family in Vienna to daughter Mimi Fischer's family in New York City.

The Fischers discuss their living conditions, which change as they take on an increasing number of boarders and as their services, such as heating, are cut. Malvine attempts to supplement income with handicrafts, and younger family members are sent for forced labor (Arbeitsdienst). With increased urgency, the Fischers seek visas and affidavits for emigration, initially attempting to join Mimi in the United States, then trying for Shanghai and other places. The letters also offer insight, albeit indirectly, into the life of Mimi's family in New York as refugees. Although the bulk of the letters were written by Malvine and Leopold Fischer, some letters or parts of letter contain messages from other relatives. Many of the envelopes bear Nazi censorship stamps.
