Biographical Note

Henry M. Shotland (Heinz Schottland) was born in Brezezin (Poland) in 1884. His family moved to Germany and he grew up in Burghaslach (Bavaria). His father was a Talmudic scholar and his mother ran a small store. Shotland graduated from the Israelitische Lehrerbildungsanstalt in Wuerzburg, where he particularly distinguished himself in music. His first position was as a cantor and teacher in Ruelzheim, where he met his wife, Eugenia Eva Loeb. Shortly before World War I he was transferred to serve in Crailsheim, where he stayed with his family until 1921, interrupted by his service in the army, for which he was awarded the Iron Cross. In 1921 he moved to Frankenthal and became the teacher and cantor of the local Jewish community. He immigrated to New York in 1938, where he founded the congregation Tikvo Chadoshoh. He also resumed his studies at a yeshiva and was ordained as a rabbi. He died in 1957, age 73.
