Scope and Content Note

This collection contains personal identification documents and school records of Alex Löwenstein, as well as a short manuscript on Grevenbroich and materials on antisemitic legislation.

The collection contains papers concerning Alex Löwenstein and his son, Ludwig. Folder one contains Alex's military passport from 1893 and certificates and diplomas related to his studies to become an elementary school teacher. The lists in folder 2 include the first and last names of Jewish residents, place of residence, occupation, birth year, when and how they left Grevenbroich, their fate during the war, and current place of residence, where applicable. Of interest are the documents in folder 3 concerning Ludwig's attempt to appeal the revokation of his license to practice law by the Reich government. There are also official instructions for recording Jewish property and some other government announcements. Folder 3 is entirely photocopies.

Biographical Note

Alexander Löwenstein was born in 1873. He married Paula Meier of Grevenbroich. Alex worked as an elementary school teacher and cantor, leading religious services in small communities in the area. Ludwig was born in 1903. He studied law, settling in Düsseldorf where he practiced until 1933 when his license was revoked. He then emigrated to Palestine, following by his parents.
