Biographical Note

Elizabeth Stoerk née Alsberg was born in Mannheim, Germany, the daughter of a Jewish father and a gentile mother. After the complete forced sellout of their business, the family moved to Berlin in 1934, where Elizabeth, her brother Harold (Heinz) and their father Arthur Alsberg survived as forced laborers. In 1947 the family emigrated to New York; Elizabeth married the pathologist Herbert C. Stoerk, originally from Vienna, Austria.

In 1998 Elizabeth and her brother went to Volkmarsen, Westphalia, following an invitation from the organization ‘Rueckblende gegen das Vergessen e.V.’ (Ernst Klein) in order to find former Jewish citizens of Volkmarsen in the U.S.A., England, Israel, Australia, and South Africa.

The name Alsberg, after a mountain in the Volkmarsen area, was first chosen by Schmuel Heinemann’s six sons and one daughter and first time mentioned in 1808. The Alsberg family tree is based on the Jewish register, marriages and deaths, 1825-1874. The listings may be found in the collection of the late Rabbi Bernard Billings, whose records are now at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
