Biographical Note

John J. Neumaier, the son of Leonore Schwarz Neumaier, was president emeritus of SUNY New Paltz and former president of Moorhead State University, Minn. He was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1921. After attending schools in Switzerland, he went to college in Italy, where he later worked as a private secretary. In August 1938, he returned to Germany. He went to England for 14 months, and on to the US in 1940. As a newspaper columnist for the Kingston Daily Freeman, he wrote extensively about the Holocaust, about his mother and her fate, and about his experiences and firsthand observations of life in Nazi Germany before World War II. He settled in Poughkeepsie, New York, with his wife Sara Fletcher Luther.
