Biographical Note

Dr. Heinz G. Markwald was born in Berlin in 1911. He studied medicine and participated in fraternities and sport clubs. His father Siegbert Markwald (1874-1937), a physician, served in the German army in World War I, which made it possible for his son Heinz, to finish his studies in Berlin after 1933. In 1937, after having gotten engaged to Susanne Hahn, he obtained an affidavit and immigrated to the United States in July of 1937. His mother, Sofie Buetow Markwald (born 1888 in Soldau, East Prussia) was deported to Theresienstadt and perished in Auschwitz.

Heinz Markwald began his medical career as an intern at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut in July 1938. He got married to Susanne Hahn in January 1940.
