Biographical Note
Marie Haas was born 1872 in Freiburg im Breisgau into an assimilated German Jewish family. Her brother was the politician Ludwig Haas. In 1893 she married the industrialist Adolf Schloss, who died in 1907 at the age of 43. Marie Schloss then moved to Karlsruhe, where she made her name as an author, journalist, and a fighter for civil – specifically women’s - rights. Eventually she moved to Switzerland where she died in Berne in 1952.
