Kaufhaus Schwarz Aryanization Records
Scope and Content Note
This collection concerns the "Aryanization" of the Schwarz department store (Kaufhaus Schwarz) in Salzburg, Austria. All materials are photocopies of the official files found in the Salzburger Landesarchiv under Ar 037/45/97, Box 85.
Documents include correspondence with the store's primary owner, Dr. Paul Schwarz; correspondence between various Nazi functionaries, primarily the agent in charge of liquidation, Josef Mitterdorfer, concerning the specifics of the "Aryanization" proceedings; detailed financial records for the store; contracts; and legal documents concerning the liquidation of the company. The Schwarz department store (Kaufhaus Schwarz) was located in Salzburg, Austria. The store's primary owner was Dr. Paul Schwarz. In 1938, the business was "Aryanized" by forcing Schwarz to sell. In following years, the question of whether the business should be liquidated or continued was debated by various Nazi functionaries and agencies.
