Biographical Note

Ruth Schmidt Hesse, born Ruth Schmid, was born in Germany in 1919 and died in New York in 1991. She left for England with the help of 'Kindertransport' as an assistant teacher, changing the spelling of her last name from Schmid to Schmidt in the 1940s. By the late 1940s she had immigrated to Washington Heights, N.Y., where she met her husband, Ernst Hesse and had a son, Mark A. Hesse.
