Scope and Content Note

The C. Theo Marx Family collection consists entirely of the materials used by C. Theo Marx for his book The Kohnstamm and Allied Families.

By and large the materials collected here consist of photocopies form various archives and print-outs.

Original materials consist of correspondence with archives and other research institutions and other members of the Kohnstamm family, genealogical tables, photographs, manuscripts.

Biographical Note

Carl Theodor Marx was born in 1920, in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1934 his parents sent him to a boarding school in England.

After boarding school, C Theo Marx studied engineering at City and Guilds College. In 1940 he was interned, along with other German Jews, at the internment camp on the Isle of Man.

Shortly after his release he joined his father’s engineering company where he remained for many years.

C. Theo Marx was a member of the Association of Jewish Refugees and a council member of the Wiener Library.

Carl Theo Marx died on January 6th, 2010.

C. Theo Marx Family Collection

The order of the collection follows the order in which the book The Kohnstamm and Allied Families is compiled. The ancestor, Don Menachem Chajim Ha-Kohen is designated by the letter K, with his two sons being assigned letters KA and KB. The following generations are identified by a numerical code, which indicated seniority among siblings and relations to the rest of the family.
