Scope and Content Note

Photocopies of Schoenberner's literary estate, the originals of which are in possession of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, Stanford University.

The collection includes a certificate of residence and travel permits from Schoenberner's time in France; an affidavit for immigration to USA and correspondence with the Visa Review Committee; as well as Schenberner’s PEN membership card.

Also included are correspondence from 1927-1969 with publishers and with individuals such as Albert Einstein, D. H. Lawrence, Heinrich Mann, Klaus Mann, Reinhold Niebuhr, Upton Sinclair, and Stefan Zweig.

Manuscripts and essays in both English and German, as well as manuscripts and clippings of book reviews by Franz Schoenberner are included, as well as genealogical writings by Schoenberner.

Articles and manuscripts reviewing Schoenberner's work are also included.

In addition, there are four bound volumes of Eleonora Schoenberner's published work, Mirabelle.

Biographical Note

Born in Berlin on December 18, 1892, Franz Schoenberner was a writer and editor of Simplicissimus, 1929-1933. He emigrated to France in 1933, to the United States in 1941, and died in New Jersey in April 1970.

Arrangement

This collection consists of seven series. Due to the fact that the items in the collection are photocopies and not originals, the collection has not been arraged according to any order beyond the general outline of this series structure. This finding aid is merely an itemized list of the contents in the collection, meant to aid in research, should researchers elect to consult these photocopies.
