Paul Mühsam Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a broad range of Mühsam family documents, mostly from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, there are several photographs of Paul Mühsam's ancestors, and an entire folder which attests to Paul's father Marcus's military service, including certificates of recognition for his service during the Franco-Prussian war, correspondence from the front, and information on veteran's organizations. Other materials include a genealogical album dating to the nineteenth century and a photocopy of a permit to build a synagogue in Tecklenburg in 1770. Folder 1 contains a signed autobiographical sketch by Paul Mühsam.

Biographical Note
Paul Mühsam was born in Brandenburg an der Havel in 1876. Marcus Mühsam was his father, and his mother was a member of the Wallach family. He was a lawyer and notary public in Görlitz between 1905 and 1935 when he emigrated to Palestine. Mühsam was the author of numerous poems, short stories, essays and plays; in particular his theological and philosophical writings won him praise from notables such as Stefan Zweig. He died in Jerusalem in 1960. For a signed autobiographical sketch, see folder 1.

A photocopy of the poetry album Gedichte von meinem lieben Tage, der lieben Mama gewidmet by Joseph Wallach has been removed. The original is located at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach .
Paul Mühsam 's memoir Ich bin ein Mensch gewesen , (Jerusalem, 1935-1956) call number MM 57 has been cataloged and digitized separately.
