 Collection
Identifier: AR 159

Scope and Content Note

Vital documents, papers, and correspondence of the family of Simon May (1816-1866, Hamburg), as well as religious treatise on Orthodox Judaism by Simon May.

The first folder contains various vital papers (birth, marriage, death certificates) pertaining to Simon May and his wife Julie (née Meyerhof). In this folder are also May's citizenship certificate (Bürgereid), will, apprenticeship contract, and a business contract. Simon May's correspondence, both to his wife Julie and to other family and close friends comprises the second folder; interspersed with the letters are several poems, some of which may have been written by Julie May. The following folder contains transcriptions of a few letters from Simon May's brother-in-law Israel Meyerhof, textile manufacturer in Hildesheim, some personal and some professional in nature, although many mention affairs of the Jewish community in Hildesheim. In the final folders is a defense of Orthodox Judaism composed by Simon May (both a handwritten original and a typed transcription).
