Walter Heinemann Collection
Scope and Content Note
The bulk of the collection contains material pertaining to Jewish life in Braunschweig, Germany, before World War II, including documents from Walter Heinemann's life in Braunschweig during the 1930s and material pertaining to the larger Jewish community and its prominent members. The collection also contains photographs of concentration camps and material pertaining to prominent Jewish individuals and organizations. Included are correspondence, photographs, government forms, notes, speeches, and clippings.
Folder 1 contains correspondence pertaining to the creation of a Jewish scientific journal.
Folder 2 contains photographs taken during the libration of the Ohrdruf concentration camp, as well as a picture report with photographs from Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen, and Ohrdruf.
Folder 3 contains personal documents of Walter Heinemann, including documents pertaining to his imprisonment in Braunschweig in 1933, with related newspaper article; questionnaire completed by Heinemann regarding his ancestry; and correspondence pertaining to the efforts of the Heinemann family to emigrate from Germany. Of particular interest are signed personal letters sent to Heinemann from Albert Einstein and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr.
Folder 4 contains Heinemann's notes on a variety of Jewish artists, scientists, politicians, authors, and thinkers.
Folder 5 contains material pertaining to the Jewish community of Braunschweig, including clippings about the community and some of its prominent members; transcripts of speeches given by Ernst Böhme eulogizing political opponents killed by the Nazis in Rieseberg in 1933; and list of Jews from Braunschweig whose fate could not be determined at the end of World War II.
Folder 6 contains clippings, the bulk of which are obituaries, for Braunschwieg city councilor and privy councilor Max Jüdel.
Folder 7 contains clippings on a variety of topics, including B'nai B'rith, Leo Baeck and the Leo Baeck Institute, and German Jewish psychologist Walter Blumenfeld.

Biographical Note
Walter Heinemann was born in Braunschweig in 1883. He was a physician in Berlin and Braunschweig and president of the Braunschweig Jewish community. In 1935, he emigrated from Germany to Palestine and later to England and the United States.
